Origin

Besides his obsession with Yamato-damashii (the spirit of Japanese values and ardor of a warrior), Sushiyama bears a resemblance to a mysterious youkai from Kumamoto called abura sumashi. Almost all information about this youkai was lost, save for the possibility that he was originally the ghost of a monk who stole the oil to fuel lamps and escaped into the woods (hence the name, meaning "oil presser"): at the time oil was extracted from tea seeds and very difficult to produce, making oil theft a serious crime. Sometimes elderly women of Kumamoto will tell others "You know, there used to live an abura sumashi around here...", only for the youkai to call out from the woods saying "I still do!"

Name Origin

  • "Sushiyama" might be a combination of sushi and Fujiyama (misnomer of Fuji-san, or Mt. Fuji), two words stereotypically associated with Japan. "Yamato" could refer to Yamato-damashii.
