Komasan in the City: The Magic Floor
Komasan begins this episode, as all episodes, writing back home to his mama updating her on his city savviness and Komajiro’s development. Today, the Komas are going up the Springdale observation tower. Komasan is so excited for this excursion, but his little brother is more interested in whatever he has on his phone. The older Koma is looking forward to seeing “all the way to the end of the world from the top” of the tower, but Komajiro bursts that bubble by explaining the actual distance people can see from the top. And, as the brothers ride the glass elevator to the top, Komasan gets wound up about how the elevator is going to reach the sun soon and how small people on the ground are becoming. Again, Komajiro is uninterested. Everything about the tower is obvious to him, and he’s beginning to feel like the older brother between the two.
Komasan is completely blown away by the view from the observation deck. He even spots a mountain and wonders aloud if the beautiful mountain he sees is the one the Komas had at home. But Komajiro looks up a map and determines it’s not without really looking up. Now, Komasan notices the floor is transparent and he can’t take it. He doesn’t even know what they should do about the invisible floor, eventually deciding they should both “get off this magic floor so [they] don’t fall through.” Again, Komajiro lets his big brother know what’s going on. He explains how unmagical and safe the floors are. With that crisis averted, Komasan wanders over to the gift shop and falls in love with the water bottles shaped like the observation tower. He throws together a plan to play it cool and not betray his excitement, but Komajiro opens his pack to reveal that he bought two water bottles on the ground floor because they’re cheaper. They spend all day on the observation deck and Komasan looks out over Springdale’s lights while Komajiro still does something on his phone. The big Koma is disappointed his brother
didn’t love this experience as much as he did when he sees something that shocks him. Komajiro notices his brother tense up and asks why, and Komasan points an area of the sky out. A shooting star falls right through that patch and Komajiro lets out his own, “oh my swirls!” That whole day’s worth of Komajiro’s enthusiasm gushes out all at once for a single shooting star and his brother’s ability to find it. That one moment made the trip worthwhile to Komasan.
Yo-kai Dazzabel & Yo-kai Dimmy
Nate’s nervous about going to school because it’s parents day, so his mom is coming along today as well as the usual Whisper. The butler loves the idea of parents day so much, he goes on and on about the benefits before finishing and accidentally drawing attention to a grayed-out Jibanyan. He’s just standing still and facing the corner. When he turns around, his eyes and mouth have been replaced by black circles which freaks his friends out.
When they ask, in panicky voices, what’s wrong the cat replies, “ it’s OK. It’s OK. Don’t worry about me.” Though Nate notices that his feline friend is “acting like a zombie,” he brushes it off and goes downstairs to find his mother dressed in a princess dress and tiara. When Nate asks if she’s going to dress like that at his school, implying it would be embarrassing, she takes it the exact wrong way and goes to change into an even more flamboyant outfit, thinking she looks “chic and fashionable.” Every criticism from Nate just pushes her to dress even more ridiculously, finally ending up in a giant, winged, sherbet-rainbow gown with a feather headdress and fan. She asks proudly if “people will mistake [her] for Lady Gaga.” On her way out the door, she slides her feet into literal glass slippers. When Whisper tries to find a bright side, that Nate’s mother is trying so hard to make a good impression on everyone, he accidentally fills the boy with fear of mortal embarrassment. The first solution he comes up with is dropping out of school to escape mortification. When Nate sees his mother walking down the street in her costume, it dawns on him that this is unusual behavior for his mother and cracks open the yo-kai watch, exposing a made-up skeleton wearing an outdated red and black-striped suit. Her name is Dazzabel and Whisper explains that her inspiration causes moms to dress badly. Nate decides the best way to combat Dazzabel is by calling a yo-kai with no interest in fashion whatsoever, Hungramps. But he falls asleep in the middle of the street. When Nate wakes him up, the old-timer announces his intent to “give that vixen a stern talking-to.”
Nate’s mom is getting closer and closer to school every second, but Nate and Whisper let Hungramps waddle up and try to reason with the fashion disaster. But she grabs onto him, and turns him into a beach bum with no interest in helping out. Nate pleads with Whisper to help using his database, but he was dressed up as Tuxedo Mask while no one was looking. But he still has enough wit about him to remember “that one” yo-kai can help. With the tablet, Whisper finally explains they’re looking for the sad-eyed ninja, Dimmy, who has the power to reduce people and yo-kai to dim shadows of their former selves. Nate realizes they know where to find Dimmy, connected to completely gray and bland Jibanyan from earlier in the morning. Whisper asks Nate to find Dimmy with the watch, but, like Whisper a little bit ago, Nate was inspirited off screen, and now can’t really do much but remind people not to worry about him. Dimmy reveals himself though, and Whisper has to attempt to convince Nate to rediscover his vigor, and he begs Dimmy to stop Dazzabel. They both just say, “it’s OK. It’s OK. Don’t worry about me.” Whisper’s patience burns out when Nate’s mom walks through the school gate, so he physically grabs onto Dimmy and slams him into Dazzabel, second-hand inspiriting her and knocking her bow off. This finally breaks her spell, and Nate’s mother sprints home to protect the world from her dress. Dazzabel collapses to the floor and begins to cry, so her medal just falls out of her where Whisper collects it. And, for some reason, Dimmy offers his medal as well. But Dimmy’s still inspiriting Nate, so Whisper cuts the segment off.
Manjimutt: The Great [Dog] Escape: Episode 3
Manjimutt is going to make a third break for it. This time, he has four friends: George, a big strong carpenter with intimate knowledge of Alcatraz; Newton, an ex-acrobat; David, a super genius hacker and Lenny, a former doctor. Manjimutt has appointed himself the leader, and he sets the plan in motion one day in the workshop, telling the others that they’re going to break out tonight. As his team walks away with a scrap of wire and a brand new table, Manjimutt just keeps hammering away and nodding.
After night falls, the team returns to the gears that occasionally make a small tunnel to the outside of the prison. David the hacker uses the wire Lenny collected from a table saw to stop the gears spinning completely, and they all run through until they reach a brick wall. George pushes one brick out and the wall collapses, making room for them to run down another hallway. Manjimutt waits for the others to head through the corridor to follow, but, when he does, he bangs his shin on a fallen brick and takes a breather. George checks on him, but Manjimutt assures him he’s fine.
The team makes it outdoors and up to the outer wall of Alcatraz Island, and Manjimutt narrates that any sound they make at all will give their position away and get them caught. Newton scales the wall and drops a rope down to his comrades. Everyone makes it to the top all right, but Manjimutt is suddenly overcome with a sickening feeling. They broke out on a full moon, and Manjimutt’s dog instincts are pushing him to howl. He fights it as long as he can, which isn’t very long, and lets it go. He howls loud into the night and spotlights find him immediately. They’re caught. He apologizes quietly, but it’s no good. Their “deep bonds have now been broken.” But Manjimutt thinks back to all their interactions, and wonders if he was ever their friend. But he refuses to give up regardless.
