Yo-kai Watch Episode 55 is an episode of Yo-kai Watch Anime. It consists of Yo-kai Folk Tales: Momotarō and Valentine New Era stories.

Part 1: Yo-kai Folk Tales: Momotaro

Nate’s having fun in the park with friends again, when he kicks the soccer ball into the bushes—again. Komasan wonders if he’s going to see the storytelling old lady again. Nate just wants his ball back, but before he knows it, he’s caught up in another one of the old lady’s stories. This time it’s another famous Japanese folktale, the story of Momotaro.

Once upon a time, an old Japanese couple lived together in the mountains. One day, the old man (played by Nate again) went up the mountain to take care of some grass. The old woman (played by Jibanyan) was getting ready to do laundry… but before that, she apparently took 2 catnaps and ate a chocolate bar in this version of the story.

Finally, when the old woman went to the river to do laundry, she found a huge peach floating downstream. However, the story is once again a little bit different—at first the old woman ignores the peach, and then eventually decides to take it home with her… by pushing the huge peach up a hill. The “old woman” (actually Jibanyan) gets sick of pushing it, and uses Paws of Fury to punch it up the hill... but it just falls down the other side.

Eventually, the old couple gets the peach into their house, and they decide to cut it open. However, just like last time, they go way overboard and slice poor Whisper into pieces once again. Eventually, the “baby boy” (played by Whisper) comes out of the peach. Next they are supposed to name him “Momotaro”, but in this version of the story they go through a few different names before deciding on Momotaro.

The story skips forward to when Momotaro is older, and the old couple asks him to go take care of the oni that are terrorizing the countryside. So Momotaro sets out in search of friends to help him take down the oni—Nate knows that in the original story he befriends a variety of different animals, but in this retelling, Momotaro becomes friends with 3 dogs: Dandoodle, Manjimutt, and Komasan. Momotaro gives each of them a dumpling and wins their hearts.

At this point the story goes completely off the rails and turns into a bizarre parody of the original story, with a giant robot anime theme. Momotaro and his 3 partners are summoned for a mission briefing , then they take off in giant robot suits to defeat the oni—who are also using giant robots. Then, an unmanned drone (driven remotely by Whisper) destroys the oni’s island base with a giant missile. Mission complete! And they all lived happily ever after…?

Komasan loved the old lady’s story just like last time, but Nate knows that’s definitely not how the story is supposed to go.

Part 2: Valentine New Era

Nate is discussing a TV show with his buddies at school, when they overhear Katie talking about how Valentines’ Day is coming up. At that moment, Nate goes into a long inner monologue about his detailed plans for Valentine’s Day. He details the different kinds of reactions to Valentine’s Day, as well as the two different kinds of chocolate—“heartfelt” chocolate given to people you actually like, and “obligation” chocolate you just give to friends.

Nate’s plan is to get the most obligation chocolate while ignoring heartfelt chocolate, by being extremely nice to others right before Valentine’s Day. This will ensure he is the highest “ranked” among the guys in his class. Returning back to reality, Katie has forgotten her notes, which catches the attention of Nate and his buddies.

Whisper and Komasan appear, apparently serving as the commentators for the “competition.” The boys will receive “points” for doing nice things for the girls, represented by a score counter over their heads. Eddie leaps to action, letting Katie borrow his notes and scoring a cool 2,800 points. Next, Katie drops her eraser on the floor, but before any of the other boys have time to react, Bear has already grabbed it and returned it to her, scoring 2,800 points as well. Nate’s got to catch up fast! Later, in science class Nate attempts to score some points by neatly organizing a handout, but it scores him zero points.

Nate needs to make a big move to catch up, and at lunchtime he offers his pudding to Katie. His efforts net him 2,800 points, bringing it to a three-way tie between the 3 boys. Their last chance is during cleanup time when Katie accidentally knocks over a vase. Nate rushes to take responsibility for it—and all the other boys follow suit, claiming they knocked over the vase.

Ultimately, Katie claims responsibility for knocking the vase over and cleans it up. None of the boys know how many points they got for their efforts, so they have to wait until the next day to see how well they did. Valentine’s Day finally rolls around, and the girls all show up to school in a big group. To the boys’ surprise, they produce a huge basket of chocolate—a gift from all the girls to all the boys. No winners and no losers, just chocolate! A win-win Valentine’s Day for everyone, as Whisper and Komasan wrap up their commentary.
